Before the catheterization lab, your cardiologist will perform a thorough review to ensure the procedure is safe and necessary.
Your Assessment:
- Medical History & EKG: A detailed review of your symptoms and an electrocardiogram to check your heart’s electrical rhythm.
- Blood Work: Evaluating kidney function (important for clearing the contrast dye used during the procedure) and checking blood clotting parameters.
- Procedure Explanation: The cardiologist will explain the radial access method, what you will feel, and answer any questions to ease your anxiety.

2. The Angiography Procedure
The procedure is performed in a specialized cath lab while you are awake but mildly sedated and relaxed.
The Clinical Process:
- Radial Access: Local anesthesia is applied to your wrist. A tiny, flexible tube (catheter) is inserted into the radial artery. This is much more comfortable than the older femoral (groin) approach.
- Contrast Dye Injection: The catheter is gently guided to your heart. A special iodine dye is injected, which illuminates your coronary arteries under X-ray (fluoroscopy).
- Identifying Blockages: The cardiologist watches the monitors in real-time, instantly identifying any narrowed or completely blocked arteries that are restricting blood flow to your heart muscle.

3. Immediate Results and Next Steps
The most significant advantage of an angiography is that it allows for immediate treatment if necessary.
Post-Procedure:
- Same-Session Stenting (Angioplasty): If a severe blockage is found, the cardiologist can often insert a balloon and a stent during the exact same procedure to immediately restore blood flow.
- Rapid Recovery: Because the wrist approach is used, you can sit up and walk almost immediately. A tight pressure band is placed on the wrist, and you are monitored for a few hours before discharge.
- Consultation: You will receive a video of your beating heart and a detailed explanation of whether medication, stenting, or bypass surgery is the best course of action.
