Understanding Revision Surgery

Revision surgery is a specialized field dedicated to helping patients who haven’t reached their goals or have experienced complications from their initial bariatric procedure.

Your Consultation in Istanbul:

  • Failure Analysis: Investigating the root causeโ€”whether it’s anatomical dilation, band slippage, or metabolic adaptation.
  • Advanced Endoscopy: Performing a thorough ‘inside look’ to map your existing anatomy and plan the revision precisely.
  • Reflux Management: Evaluating if a conversion to Bypass is the best way to resolve post-sleeve acid reflux.
  • Goal Realignment: Setting realistic expectations for the ‘second phase’ of your weight loss journey.
Issue Potential Cause Revision Goal
Weight Regain Sleeve Dilation Conversion to Bypass
Severe Reflux Altered Anatomy Roux-en-Y Conversion
Band Failure Slippage/Erosion Removal + New Procedure
Surgical Excellence
High-Complexity Re-Operations

Surgical Excellence

Revision surgery requires a higher level of surgical skill due to existing scar tissue (adhesions). Our specialist teams excel in these complex transformations.

Specialized Techniques:

  • Sleeve-to-Bypass Conversion: The most common revision, adding a malabsorptive component to a previously restricted stomach.
  • Gastric Band Removal: Safely extracting old bands and potentially performing a new procedure in the same or a second stage.
  • Pouch Resizing: Correcting an enlarged gastric pouch from a previous bypass to restore the feeling of fullness.
  • Adhesion Management: Using precision tools to navigate previous surgical sites with minimal trauma to the surrounding tissue.
Revision Technique Difficulty Recovery
Sleeve to Bypass Conversion High 4 Weeks
Band to Sleeve Removal/Reset Moderate 3 Weeks
Pouch Reset Resizing High 4 Weeks
Nutritional Reset
Restarting Your Success Story

Nutritional Reset

A revision procedure is a powerful ‘reset button’ for your metabolism, and our nutritional support team ensures you capitalize on this second chance.

The Recovery Roadmap:

  • Phase 1 Restart: Returning to the clear liquid protocol to ensure your new surgical connections heal perfectly.
  • Addressing Deficiencies: Correcting any nutrient gaps that may have developed since your primary surgery.
  • Behavioral Support: Working with our dietitians to address ‘grazing’ or other habits that may have contributed to regain.
  • Long-Term Monitoring: Intensive follow-up blood work to monitor your metabolic response to the new anatomy.

BB Global Health provides an intensive 12-month ‘Revision Recovery’ coaching program to maximize your long-term outcomes.

Volume and Expertise โ€” What Revision Surgery Demands

Why Choose Turkey for Revision Bariatric Surgery?

Revision bariatric surgery should only be performed by centers with large primary bariatric volumes โ€” because the adhesion management and altered anatomy demand experience that lower-volume centers simply cannot provide.

Speak to Our Team
JCI-Accredited Hospitals

Patient-safety accreditation to the global standard โ€” at every BB Global Health partner hospital.

Dedicated Revision Programs

Our partner centers operate dedicated revision bariatric programs โ€” not occasional revision cases mixed into a general laparoscopy list.

High-Volume Primary + Revision Teams

Surgeons performing 400โ€“600+ primary bariatric procedures per year โ€” providing the foundation of anatomical familiarity revision surgery demands.

Significant Cost Advantage

Revision surgery is expensive in Western Europe โ€” often more than primary procedures. Turkey's pricing is 60โ€“75% lower without compromising safety standards.

Full Pre-Op Assessment On-Site

Endoscopy, imaging, and nutritional work-up completed at the partner hospital on arrival โ€” no need to arrange complex investigations across multiple providers at home.

End-to-End Coordination

BB Global Health manages every detail โ€” from operative record review to 12-month post-revision follow-up.

The most effective revision for weight regain after sleeve is conversion to gastric bypass (RYGB or OAGB). Bypass adds malabsorption and powerful metabolic hormone effects that restriction alone cannot maintain over time. The conversion is laparoscopic in most cases. Pre-operative endoscopy confirms sleeve dimensions, and operative notes from your primary surgery are reviewed to plan the revision.

Sleeve-to-bypass conversion is the most effective treatment for GERD after sleeve gastrectomy. If endoscopy confirms oesophagitis, Barrett's changes, or if symptoms are affecting quality of life and are uncontrolled with medication, revision to RYGB is strongly recommended. This is not purely a weight-loss revision โ€” it is a medically indicated procedure to prevent oesophageal progression.

In selected patients, yes. If the band is removed and the oesophagus and stomach show no significant erosion or dilation, a sleeve can be performed simultaneously. If significant mucosal damage or oesophageal dilation is present, staged surgery is safer โ€” band removal first, then sleeve 3โ€“6 months later. The decision is made after endoscopy and preoperative review.

Yes โ€” slightly. Adhesions from the first operation complicate dissection, and altered anatomy increases technical difficulty. This is why volume and specialist revision experience are critical. At high-volume centers with dedicated revision programs, complication rates for revision surgery are still acceptably low โ€” and significantly better than continuing to live with the consequences of a failed primary procedure.
