1. What Does an Echo Detect?
Unlike an EKG which checks electrical signals, an Echo checks the physical structure and mechanics of the heart.
Key Evaluations:
- Pumping Strength (Ejection Fraction): Measures how much blood the left ventricle pumps out with each contraction, vital for diagnosing heart failure.
- Valve Function: Doppler ultrasound shows the direction and speed of blood flow, instantly identifying valves that are leaking (regurgitation) or too narrow (stenosis).
- Heart Structure: Detects enlarged heart chambers, thickened walls (hypertrophy), congenital defects, or fluid buildup around the heart (pericardial effusion).

2. The Echocardiogram Procedure
The procedure is entirely non-invasive, exactly like a pregnancy ultrasound, but focused on your chest.
The Clinical Process:
- Preparation: You will lie on an examination table, usually on your left side. Small sticky patches (electrodes) may be attached to your chest to monitor your EKG simultaneously.
- The Ultrasound: The cardiologist or specialized technician applies a clear gel to your chest. They press a transducer (a wand-like device) firmly against your skin, moving it around to capture different angles of the heart.
- Real-Time Visualization: Sound waves bounce off your heart, creating moving images on the monitor. You will even be able to hear the “whoosh” sound of your blood flowing through the valves via the Doppler feature.
