1. How Does a PET-CT Work?
While CT and MRI show what organs look like, a PET scan shows how they are functioning.
The Science Behind the Scan:
- The Radiotracer: Cancer cells grow exceptionally fast and consume large amounts of glucose (sugar). A specialized radioactive sugar (usually FDG) is injected into your bloodstream.
- The Accumulation: The cancer cells eagerly absorb this radioactive sugar.
- The Image: The PET scanner detects the radiation emitted by the sugar, causing the cancerous tumors to “light up” brightly on the scan, pinpointing their exact metabolic activity and location.
A Painless Outpatient Process
2. The PET-CT Procedure
The procedure requires precise timing and preparation but is entirely painless.
The Clinical Process:
- Preparation & Fasting: You will be required to fast and avoid strenuous exercise before the scan. Upon arrival, your blood sugar is checked.
- The Injection & Rest: The radiotracer is injected. You must then rest quietly in a darkened, specialized room for about 60 minutes to allow the tracer to distribute throughout your body.
- The Scan: You lie on the scanner table, which slides through the ring-like machine. The scan itself takes about 20 to 30 minutes, during which you must remain completely still.

The results of a PET-CT are the cornerstone of any advanced cancer treatment plan.
What the Report Provides:
- Accurate Staging: It definitively shows whether the primary cancer has spread (metastasized) to lymph nodes or other organs.
- Treatment Evaluation: If you are undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy, a PET-CT can show if the tumor is shrinking or dying, proving if the treatment is effective.
- Recurrence Check: For patients in remission, it is the most sensitive way to detect if the cancer has returned. Your detailed report is usually provided within 24 to 48 hours.
